Overcoming Perfectionism

Overcoming perfectionism in abstract art can be a challenging endeavor, but it is essential for artists to embrace their creativity and find freedom in their work.

Perfectionism can stop artistic growth, stifle experimentation, and block the joy of creation.

Here are a few strategies to help overcome perfectionism in abstract art:

Embrace imperfections.

Let go of expectations. Focus on the process rather than obsessing over the result. Give yourself permission to explore different techniques and materials without worrying about achieving perfection.

Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and recognize that art is a journey. Remind yourself that mistakes are part of the learning process and that you are allowed to make them.

Experiment and take risks: Try new techniques, colors, and materials. Challenge yourself to push the boundaries of your comfort zone. Embrace the unknown and use it as a catalyst for creativity.

Celebrate progress: Recognize and celebrate the progress you make along the way. Each artwork is a stepping-stone on your artistic journey. Embrace the growth, learning, and evolution that occur with each piece you create.

Overcoming perfectionism is an ongoing process that requires patience, self-reflection, and a willingness to let go of control.

By adopting a mindset of exploration, self-compassion, and artistic freedom, you can break free from the demands of perfectionism and find greater joy and fulfillment in your artwork.

Perfectionism is one of the biggest mindset pitfalls an artist can have that will bring your painting flow to a halt.

I happen to have a ten-minute YouTube video that talks about three different things that can stop you from progressing in your creative flow.

Perfectionism, fear, and not believing in yourself are the three top mindset blocks that I talk about.

I’ll offer you three suggestions on how to overcome these blocks.

I’m not saying it’s easy, but it will help you move forward.

Think of this: “Little by little, step-by step I’ll progress.”

And this doesn’t pertain just to creating abstract art, it’s something to remember throughout our life.

I hope this will be a reminder to move forward in your creative process, no matter what that is.
